Drama featuring local actors runs Jan. 22-Feb. 14
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL — The Grapes of Wrath will be on the Matuza Main Stage of Limelight Theatre Jan. 22 through Feb. 14.
A classic by John Steinbeck, the play is adapted by Frank Galati. Directed by Dave Alan Thomas, it features 26 local actors and musicians in the cast. (See the cast list below the story.)
Desperately proud, but reduced to poverty by the loss of their farm, the Joads pile their few possessions on a battered old truck and head west for California, hoping to find work and a better life.
drama won a 1990 Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Award. The play is a powerful and deeply affecting stage version of one of the masterpieces of American literature.
Holding to the simplicity and directness of the original novel, the play uses the sparest of technical means to convey its timeless message of the persistence and strength of the human spirit as it battles against the adversities of nature and an uncaring society.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, and 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday. Opening night on Friday, Jan. 22 features complimentary pre-show champagne, and a meet-the-cast party following the performance.
Tickets are $26 for adults, $24 for seniors, $20 for military and students, and a free ticket for children 12 and younger with a full paid adult ticket. For reservations, go to limelight-theatre.org to choose your seats or call the box office at 904-825-1164.
