St. Augustine, FL (April 15) - The St. Augustine Art Association presents "Brave Women: 150 Years of Courage," a concert and reception honoring the 150th Anniversary of the Sisters of St. Joseph. The performance by Cantorae St. Augustine takes place on Sunday, May 22, 3 p.m. at 22 Marine Street.
Cantorae St. Augustine is best known for singing monthly vespers at the Mission Nombre de Dios. Director Mary Jane Ballou, a specialist in chant and polyphony, has crafted a rich program of songs, readings and images to highlight the nuns' arrival and good works in St. Augustine during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The musical journey spans centuries to include Latin, French and English chants, spirituals and even Stephen Foster.
Many of the Sisters will be in attendance to meet and greet the audience. Also, an exhibition of original works of art produced by the Sisters of St. Joseph over decades will be featured in the gallery, May 6 - 29. The display includes paintings, icons, pottery, hand painted porcelain, lace, basketry, tapestries and more.
Concert seating is limited. To make reservations, call the St. Augustine Art Association at (904) 824-2310.
