Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (November 2, 2015) — The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall presents Butch Trucks, founding member and drummer of The Allman Brothers, and The Freight Train Band featuring members of the extended Allman Brothers family live in concert on Sunday, December 27, 2015. Tickets for Butch Trucks and The Freight Train Band will go on sale this Friday, November 6, 2015 at 10 a.m.
Butch Trucks is an American drummer who is one of the founding members of The Allman Brothers Band. One of Trucks’ first bands was local Jacksonville band The Vikings, who made one 7-inch record in 1964. Another early band was The 31st of February which formed and broke up in 1968. This group’s lineup eventually included both Duane Allman and Gregg Allman. They recorded a cover of “Morning Dew”, by 1960s folk singer Bonnie Dobson. Trucks then helped form The Allman Brothers Band in 1969, along with Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley and fellow drummer Jai Johanny Johanson. Together, the two drummers developed a rhythmic drive that would prove crucial to the band. Trucks laid down a powerful conventional beat while the jazz-influenced Johanson added a second laminate of percussion and ad libitum cymbal flourishes, seamlessly melded into one syncopated sound. Said founding member and co-lead guitarist Dickey Betts of Trucks’ addition to the original band lineup, “When Butch came along, he had that freight train, meat-and-potatoes kind of thing that set Jaimoe up perfectly. He had the power thing we needed.”
The Freight Train Band features members of the extended Allman Brothers family including Berry Oakley Jr. (son of Allman Brothers bassist Berry Oakley) on bass, Vaylor Trucks (son of Butch Trucks) on guitar, Bruce Katz (has performed with Gregg Allman & Friends, The Allman Brothers) on keys and Damon Fowler on lead vocals and guitar. With Butch Trucks and The Freight Train Band, you can expect a lot more than just an evening of Allman Brothers Band music – you can expect an evening of great, exciting rock as it’s the first time an Oakley and a Trucks have been on the same stage in 40 years!
