This Dark Comedy is a Florida Premiere!
St. Augustine, FL - The Florida premiere of A Facility for Living opens with the preview show on March 3 at Limelight Theatre.
Opening night on March 4 features pre-show complimentary champagne and meet-the-cast reception following the show.
The story: Joe Taylor, a retired actor, moves into a prison-turned-elder-care facility shortly after the demise of Medicare and the election of Dick Cheney to President. There he discovers a community of loveable, irascible inmates hell-bent on bucking the dehumanizing system in which they have landed. Together, this band of aging misfits rediscovers purpose and dignity in the face of a system mightily stacked against them. A delightful comedy with bite from Katie Forgette, that dares to confront the issue of aging in America.
Directed by well-known St. Augustine actor and storyteller, Margaret Kaler, the local cast includes Lou Agresta as Joe; Brad Segal as Wally; E-Rock Rasmussen as Kevin; Mary Jung-Martin as Judy; Natalie Beltrami as Mitzi; and Rhona Bentz as Nurse Claudia.
"This wonderful cast and crew have spent many hours of hard work to create this comedic take on a serious subject, ultimately life and death," said Margaret Kaler.
"Satire exposes social injustice with humor. This satire-A Facility for Living-ridicules the heavy- handed enforcement of excessive rules and regulations that result in not only in loss of liberty, but in the destruction of the joys of living," Margaret writes in her Director's Notes.
"A Facility for Living shows us institutional living, rife with blame and punishment. 'Hell' as Wally says, where one is punished for the sins of earlier behaviors, and certainly given no present pleasure of any sort if such pleasure can possibly be avoided. But the joys of life are not so easily extinguished. Enter the actor, fanning the spark of life with theatre - the art that most closely mirrors human life. It could be any art, any true interest in which an individual finds energy and joy," Margaret continues in her explanation of the show.
